Poem that makes me think – Long night full moon, D A Powell

You only watch the news to find out
where the fires are burning, which way
the wind is blowing, and whether
it will rain. Forecast ahead but first:
A mother’s boy laid out
in the street for hours.
These facts don’t wash away.

Long night full moon

Short. Sharp. Most definitely to the point. Who amongst us watches the news other than to collect examples of other people and their misfortune? To know the news without having to experience  the news, so see how horrible things are for other people and make us thankful for our own existence? Perhaps it isn’t like that, perhaps that is a far too cynical view. But who amongst us forgets the latest bombing, the latest train crash, the latest violent crime the second our finger hovers over our remote and we change channel?
